Recap: August 2014 playlist

I’ve decided to blog my monthly mixes, and when time permits I’ll set up a Spotify account so I can share them all. Here’s how my August playlist turned out:

2014 08August Mix

Stormy Monday (Marlena Shaw)

As You Said (Cream)

It Ain’t Fair (Aretha Franklin)

C.R.E.AM. (Wu-Tang Clan)

Emotional Weather Report (Tom Waits)

Just About to Go (Alvin Youngblood Hart)

Stepping Razor (Peter Tosh)

When I Was Cruel No. 2 (Elvis Costello)

White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane)

Nude (Radiohead)

Lotus (Scrapomatic)

Flute Loop (Beastie Boys)

Sun King (The Beatles)

Got to Give It Up (Part 1) (Marvin Gaye)

The Seed (2.0) (The Roots)

After working hard on July’s playlist I needed to create something laid back, so this one begins with four or five noticeably relaxed tracks. The Alvin Youngblood Hart song picks up the pace, but I stayed with a reggae theme and kept it from getting too hectic. The end gets funky and fun and emphasizes the flute. This list began when I heard Cream’s “As You Said” on random. I’d never noticed the song before: it sounds more like a Jack Bruce solo work, which makes sense because Cream was getting ready to break up when it appeared. The vocals are distorted by a Leslie organ speaker and the primary instrument is a cello. It’s psychedelic chamber music and it’s surprisingly modern somehow. “The Seed (2.0)” makes an appearance because it’s a song Amber associates with Brooklyn. St. Vincent’s “Digital Witness” is on my May playlist because it has similar meaning for me.
