September 2014 Playlist: Paul McCartney and the piano

2014 09September Mix

4% Pantomime (The Band with Van Morrison)

Carry That Weight (The Beatles)

Promise to You Girl (Paul McCartney)

Refuse to Be Saved (Elvis Costello and The Roots)

Red Beans and Rice (Booker T and the MGs)

Joe Sample (Soulive)

2+2=5 (Christopher O’Riley)

Good Golly, Miss Molly (Jerry Lee Lewis)

Mess Around (Ray Charles)

Nubian Lady (Yusuf Lateef)

Freedom (Jimi Hendrix)

Fixing a Hole (The Beatles)

Moment’s Notice (John Coltrane)

Clair de Lune (The Philadelphia Orchestra)

This list started to take shape when a random shuffle played “Carry That Weight” and “Promise to You Girl,” juxtaposing tracks by young Paul McCartney (1969, age 27) and older Paul (2005, age 63). During another random shuffle I noticed the gleaming, chiming guitars in “Fixing a Hole” and appreciated the song in a new way. Random mode also gave me Christopher O’Riley’s dreamy interpretation of “2+2=5” right before that bashing version of “Good Golly Miss Molly.” “4% Pantomime” is not one of The Band’s best songs, but I love the duet between Richard Manuel and Van Morrison and the weird, disconnected lyrics: sad snippets about getting drunk, being abandoned, and suffering on the road. It’s a confusing blur and it feels like the truth about being in a band. Richard Manuel died trying to escape that story.

I included “Joe Sample” because of his passing while I worked on this mix, and it’s part of a smooth center section. I paired “Freedom” with “Fixing a Hole,” and the Coltrane song – from Blue Train, an album I love so much – bridged a very tricky gap between a Beatles song and a classical piece. I included “Clair de Lune” because of its role in our engagement that month, of course.
